Proving By Research – Report Findings

Dr Dorian Garrick is one of New Zealand’s leading geneticists. He has undertaken years of research into animal breeding and genetics, both in New Zealand and America.  He is well published and highly regarded as an expert in the industry, and has held formal consultancy contracts with both AgResearch and LIC.  Dr Garrick as been involved in the design and review of the current New Zealand animal evaluation model.

Dr Garrick was asked to analyse the genetic effect to farmers from using a group of 10 young high BW sires compared with the New Zealand traditional breeding method of 10 proven sires of the same BW. His conclusion is that the average BW would be the same for either option but with a marginally wider variation using the young sire option.

This graph illustrates the minimal effect in a herd from using a team of unproven sires.
