www.libertygenetics.co.nz Dr Dorian Garrick - Report Findings
Leading New Zealand Geneticist Dr Dorian Garrick was contracted to analyse the genetic effect to farmers from using a group of 10 young high BW sires compared with the New Zealand traditional breeding method of 10 proven sires of the same BW. His conclusion is that the average BW would be the same for either option but with a marginally wider variation using the young sire option. Table One: illustrates the final spread of BW at 99% reliability compared with their earlier ancestry BW’s. Clearly some bulls are not as good as their ancestry BW’s indicated while a similar number will be genetically superior to their ancestry BW. Group average will remain the same.Table Two: illustrates the minimal effect in a herd from using a team of unproven sires. It could be argued that while the average result for the two breeding options is the same, the flatter distribution curve from the team of unproven sires means culling decisions are easier and more effective while at the other end this option delivers more superior animals for future breeding.
